Trucker Texting Termination

According to this New York Times article a new law was passed down on Tuesday banning truck drivers from texting while driving. If these drivers are caught the face a fine of up to $2750. At the same time those these truckers can still fool around with their onboard computers which in my opinion are just as distracting if not more.  The research conducted the Department of Transportation showed that a distracted texting driver takes their eyes off the road for 5 seconds and at the speed limit that equates to a football field.  Is it just me or does this rule not extend far enough.  Why are just truckers being targeted here when any drivers who texts is equally distracted and as much at risk at causing serious accidents. But, I digress.

In unrelated news, the Blues finally won a game last night 2-0 over the Calgary Flames.  They are on a big western Canada road trip now and any chance of making that crucial 8th spot depends upon a solid showing. Can’t wait for ESPN 3-D and the hopeful return of hockey to that network so that I can watch the blues disappoint in all dimensions.

  1. First, let me comment on the Blues … You are talking to a Cubs fan here — you don’t even know the definition of disappointment!

Second, the texting. This is a good start. Now, dig into it. Why was the texting law passed? Why did it not go further? Is it because the legislators didn’t think of it or because there are lobbies? How big of a problem is it for truckers (relative to the regular population)? Why did they restrict the law to truckers? Tell me more about how we got here!
